Subject: South African researchers' email address

There was a post in cryonet more than a month ago which I have copied and sent
so it has all of these >>> signs in front.

New Scientist Magazine, 2 December 1995, "In Brief" has a mention of
>> >a cyropreservation advance by a group of researchers, Olga Visser,
>> >Dirk du Plessis, Pierre Cilliers and Chris Steinman at the H. F.
>> >Verwoerd Hospital in Pretoria, South Africa.
>> >
>> >New Scientist reports that they've developed a cryopreservant liquid
>> >which does not expand during freezing, and which is suitable for
>> >liquid nitrogen preservation of whole organs. The article suggests
>> >that this opens the way to organ banks, but it doesn't describe
>> >the group's procedures or the nature of the cryopreservant.
>

In reaction to this post,
I immediately contacted Professor Nielen Stander from the University of
Pretoria, with whom I have been
working for a while, and he gave me Professor Cilliers email address. I
asked his permission to release his email address to cryonet, and to
check whether he will be willing to answer questions about the work mentioned.

Professor Cilliers was away and when he contacted me he suggested that
Professor du Plessis is the right address. So I contacted Professor du
Plessis, and here is his reply:

>You may certainly post my E-mail address. As to the response that I might
>give to any questions, I would reserve judgement. The concept of
>cryopreservation in the way that we apply it, I am quite willing to discuss.
>The particulars of the protocol would be available only in CRYOBIOLOGY when
>published (I myself do not know when)
>Regards
>Professor Dirk J du Plessis
>Head - Cardiothoracic Surgery, University of Pretoria, South Africa
