    Hmmm...  I don't believe that I have read any John Varley,
but it sounds like I'll have locate a copy of "The Phantom of
Kansas."  (Sounds like a good thing I didn't try to write the
story, as opposed to outlining the plot....)
    My guess is that, rather than die out, murder mysteries would
change, becoming similar to the John Varley stories.
