Subject: Convincing the unconvinced

Saul Kent writes:

"we are not likely to get very far in trying to convince unreceptive
people on CryoNet (or off it) about the value of cryonics, and we
should spend little of no time trying to do so."

With respect to the current debate being crossposted to
CryoNet, I think Saul is missing the point. The point of such debates
is not (and has never been) to convince the unreceptive. It is
to raise the cryonics consciousness of *the audience*.

The current debate (only small parts of which are appearing
on CryoNet) is taking place in sci.cryonics, sci.life-extension, and
uk.legal (dont' know who started it there; John deRivaz?). These
newsgroups have a readership numbering the tens of thousands, and
every message I post includes pointers to more cryonics information
on the net. Aside from exposing many new people to the arguments
in favor of cryonics, these debates are also an opportunity to
present diverse facts and arguments in support of cryonics that
even many people within cryonics might not be aware of.

Not but not least, for me personally, on-line cryonics
debating is one of the few cryonics-related activities that I
actually ENJOY. It helps make up for the all paperpushing and
other aspects of my work in cryonics that I detest.
