DESIGNER INSECTS
The U.S. Department of Agriculture says that researchers in the U.S. and
France are collaborating on the development of reliable gene-transfer
techniques to be used on insects (as well as other invertebrates, such as
oysters). One creation might be a gene that could be given to mosquitoes to
keep them from transmitting the malaria parasite; another might be a gene
that could give freeze tolerance to insects that are mass-produced for
biocontrol, so that they can be placed in suspended animation until such
time as the farmers want to release them. (The Futurist Mar/Apr 96 p6)
