X-Message-Number: 5936 From: (David Stodolsky) Subject: Fwd: give freeze tolerance to insects Date: Thu, 14 Mar 96 20:31:41 +0100 Forward of letter <> from : DESIGNER INSECTS The U.S. Department of Agriculture says that researchers in the U.S. and France are collaborating on the development of reliable gene-transfer techniques to be used on insects (as well as other invertebrates, such as oysters). One creation might be a gene that could be given to mosquitoes to keep them from transmitting the malaria parasite; another might be a gene that could give freeze tolerance to insects that are mass-produced for biocontrol, so that they can be placed in suspended animation until such time as the farmers want to release them.
