Subject: SCI.CRYONICS British Columbia elections & BC's anti-cryonics law

British Columbia, Canada is the only Province or State that has a
law which is specifically anti-cryonics. Section 57 of the BC Cemetery
and Funeral Services Act reads: "No person shall offer for sale or
sell any arrangement for the preservation or storage of human remains
based on cryonics, irradiation or any other means of preservation or
storage, by whatever name called, that is offered or sold on the
expectation of the resuscitation of human remains at a future time."

On May 28th there will be a Provincial Election in British Columbia.
BC has an incumbent New Democratic Party (NDP, socialist) government. Polls
of decided voters currently run 40% Liberal, 33% NDP, 16% Reform, 5% Socred,
6% Others. I recommend that all residents of British Columbia who oppose
Section 57 contact their local candidates and urge them to oppose
Section 57 as part of their platform. Candidates of all major Parties
should be contacted. Communications should be in the form of as many
media as possible: letters, FAXes, e-mail, telephone, public meetings, etc.
Direct these communications not only to the candidates, but to a wide
range of their election campaign team members.

These communications should be repeated at least weekly, and friends
and neighbors should be encouraged to do likewise. People living outside
of British Columbia who have friends, relatives or other contacts in BC
should forward this message to them. Election time is prime time for
sensitivity on the part of politicians towards their constituents, and
we should not let this opportunity pass.

                          Ben Best, President
                          The Cryonics Society of Canada
