X-Message-Number: 6215 Subject: ACS News -- New ACS/BPI Contract From: Edgar Swank <> Date: Thu, 16 May 96 09:31:54 PDT Contract With BioPreservation by Jim Yount Over the past several years the American Cryonics Society has called upon the services of BioPreservation ("BPI") for both suspension of our members and for technical assistance and ad- vice. We have followed the policy of having the services of BioPreservation, the most technically sophisticated suspension provider in the field today, available to ACS members while at the same time upgrading our own in-house suspension capabilities. For about the past year we have had no contract with BioPreserva- tion, though we have had a working relationship, and have used BioPreservation's services on several occasions during this time. Recently we again signed a contract with BioPreservation with provisions to allow ACS members to select BPI and have BPI per-sonnel "on call" for suspension or standby. ACS members who choose BPI pay a $225 yearly retainer, which is paid through ACS (there are family and student discounts) and submit ACS forms to BPI for review. Should ACS call on BPI to suspend members who are not enrolled with BPI, there is a $10,000 surcharge. Also, should there be simultaneous emergencies, members pre-enrolled with BioPresevation as their selected service provider are given preferential treatment. We are very pleased to again have BioPreservation under contract. our past business dealings have served ACS members well and we look forward to a long and mutual beneficial relationship. BioPreservation is run by Mike Darwin and Dr. Steve Harris out of their southern California laboratory. Mike, who assisted with his first suspension as a teen-ager, was previously President and Research Director for Alcor and has been team leader or participant in more cryonic suspension than any other person. -- (Edgar Swank) The Land of Garg BBS -- +1 408 378-5108 Rate This Message: http://www.cryonet.org/cgi-bin/rate.cgi?msg=6215
