Lynda Cracknell, President of the Northern Territory Voluntary Euthanasia Society, reports: To those who are assuming this is the end. It is not. The Administrator yesterday signed the regulations, so we now have a law which is 100% complete, and which will come into force on Monday morning (1 July 1996). On Monday morning patients can make requests of their doctors for assistance to die. That can be followed by the 2nd medical opinion, psychiatric check, palliative care advice etc., with a view to the first assisted death occuring some time after 9 or 10 July. To assume the law has been overturned by opinion from prominent people expressed via the media, is to deny the strength of the judiciary and parliamentary systems under a democracy. THIS IS LAW and will remain so unless the courts established by our parliaments, who are in turn elected by the people, decide otherwise. <David Brandt-Erichsen> Rate This Message: http://www.cryonet.org/cgi-bin/rate.cgi?msg=6414
