Subject: Prometheus Project TAKES OFF!

!!FLASH!! Today we received our all-time single largest pledge and
it was immediately *matched* by two previous pledgers!

The Prometheus Project:

Convincingly demonstrated, scientifically proven and published,
fully reversible brain cryopreservation within 10 years.

Latest Pledge Totals

As of 02:20 EDT July 23, 1996, the total of pledges is $207,000.00 per
year for each of 10 years. The first pledge in today (actually after midnight
last night) was from Mark Mugler President of the Life Extension Society who
wrote:

>I'll put my money where my mouth is to the tune of $1,000 per year, subject
>to all the usual conditions about approving the business plan etc.
>
>For my testimonial I offer a quote from the poet William Blake, on the
>subject of his adult-onset blindness:
>
>"Do not go gentle into that good night.
>Rage, rage against the dying of the light!"

Thanks a lot Mark for your support and for showing how much *you* value life
and wish to challenge death.

Then, first thing Monday morning (whoever said Mondays were blue?) came a
$25,000.00 per year pledge from Jim Halperin who wrote in private email:

>Paul: I have been watching your messages over the past weeks, and find myself
>becoming increasingly comfortable with your Internet persona. The project you
>contemplate certainly seems logical and worthwhile. You may count on me (or
>the health-education foundation I endow, or some combination of the two of
>us) for $25,000 per year for 10 years, subject to my approval of your final
>business plan. At some point, I might even be convinced to increase this
>investment.
>
>Best of luck to you (us), Jim Halperin

As if that wasn't enough to make me positively *giddy*, later in the day I
received the following message from Saul Kent:

> I just spoke to Bill Faloon, my partner in The Life Extension Foundation,
>and we're both *very* excited about Jim Halperin's $25,000 pledge. As two of
>the first $10,000 pledgers, Bill and I have made it clear that we're behind
>The Prometheus Project wholeheartedly.
>
> I've been a cryonics activist since 1964 and have seen many exciting
>events in cryonics. In my opinion, The Prometheus Project is already (at
>this early stage in its development) one of the most exciting events in the
>history of the movement.
>
> It is also the first project I've seen, which I believe is truly capable
>of uniting the entire cryonics movement towards a single goal achievable
>within the lifetime of most cryonicists. That alone makes it of great
>historical importance.
>
> Bill and I are so excited by Jim Halperin's generous pledge that we've
>decided to match it by raising our pledges from $10,000 each to $25,000 each.
>We hope that others will match this level of pledging. We also hope that new
>people will now be inspired to make *their* pledges. And we hope to see
>larger pledges than $25,000 per year.
>
> In fact, in order to encourage others to pledge in a big way, Bill and I
>have decided to make the following pledge. We will *both* match any pledge
>*higher* than $25,000 a year!
>
>---Saul Kent

YOWIE, YIKES AND WOW!!!
It's hours later and I still haven't touched ground!

Then, just before I was about to post this, a $1,000.00 per year pledge
arrived from Mike Perry who wrote:

I think the Prometheus Project is, overall, a good idea and I hope it will
succeed.

Mike, I figured that you would come through if you possibly could, but I
really don't know how you're going to manage it with what you make. If enough
people make sacrifices like you're planning to make, we surely will succeed.
Welcome to the club!

Pledge totals in each dollar level are now:

3 for $25,000.00 per year for 10 years,
8 for $10,000.00 per year for 10 years,
5 for $5,000.00 per year for 10 years,
1 for $4,000.00 per year for 10 years,
1 for $3,000.00 per year for 10 years,
2 for $2,000.00 per year for 10 years,
16 for $1,000.00 per year for 10 years.

The 36 pledges total $2,070,000.00 over all ten years.

Pledge totals per year by national origin:

     Australia $2,500.00
     Canada $22,000.00
     France $2,000.00
     United States $175,500.00
     No country $5,000.00

Well, fellow cryonicists, you should be glad that Jim Halperin came
through with a large pledge and saved some of you from being "put on the spot"
by being directly named and asked why you have not pledged. Why not show Jim
how grateful you are and how much you agree with the sound judgement of this
man who has never even met me. I talked to him for the first time ever, when I
called him on the phone to thank him for his outstanding pledge.
But there are still many, many dedicated and very serious cryonicists
who earn sufficient money and have not uttered a word since this project
began. I sure would like to either have your pledge or know what I need to do
to satisfy you.
On the other hand, I don't wish to denigrate smaller pledges, either.
Those with moderate incomes have always supplied a major portion of cryonics
support and I believe that the Prometheus Project will be no different.
