Subject: Australia: Max Bell

>From Lynda Cracknell, Darwin, Australia:

I have been advised that Max Bell died late Friday night 2 August 1996.

Max was unable to obtain assistance to die under the new Northern Territory
Voluntary Euthanasia law when opponents of the legislation mounted a last
minute legal challenge. The legal challenge, and the intense publicity
surrounding his case, caused specialists and psychiatrists to be unwilling
to provide the additional checks required by the law.

Although the Supreme Court dismissed the challenge on 24 July (more than
three weeks after the law had come into effect), it was too late for Max who
had returned to his home town of Broken Hill in New South Wales.
