SCI.CRYONICS
Learning Channel Cryonics Show

Just watched a Learning Channel show on cryonics. The first 15 minutes
were devoted to mummification and a company in Utah that will mummify
clients. Cryonics was presented as the latest manifestation of man's
desire to beat death, with Egyptian mummification as the original
manifestation of this desire.

The last 15 minutes was given over to a non-critical, non-technical
exposition of cryonics philosophy and operations. Alcor was the only
company mentioned. People interviewed were Steve Bridge, Tanya Jones,
and Mark Muhlestein and his family, all of whom were quite effective
and well-spoken, I thought.

The interview with Muhlestein's family was a nice touch, and good
public relations/advertising strategy as well. Mark's teenage son was
shown signing up for suspension and interviewed briefly as well. If
current advertising industry strategies are anything to go by, then we
can be assured that youth is indeed an effective advertising force.

Video footage consisted largely of footage of the Alcor suspension
team driving in the ambulance, wheeling gurneys around, and some of
what appeared to be an actual suspension. There were a number of shots
of the Alcor storage facilities and large dewars; most of these shots
were filmed from the floor up, focusing on the large dewars, with what
appeared to be a bluish-purple background lighting, with a spooky
synthesizer track playing in the background.
