Subject: Motion Detection

Joe Strout.
your post on motion detection is a good one and very interesting. It would be
fun to explore and investigate. I do believe someone has already done this in
the field of burglar alarms. In fact I seem to remember this being done about
15 years ago but not with a computer. They only used a black and white camera
and detected any change in a defined area of the picture and then sounded an
alarm.

I/we/lots of folks have been thinking about a LDS (life Detection System) for a
long time, mostly as it would apply to a Cryonics patient that is alone and bed
ridden

There are lots of ideas and situations and a lot of equipment that could do the

job. There are not so many people that need this protection. So I could see no
way to make it pay and it would have to be done for the love of doing it.

Charles Platt and I have been talking and he has suggested, "Keep it simple" and
with that in mind I have started with a common hardware store Motion Activated
light Control. I plan to modify it to increase the time out to 30 minutes. It

has a range about 12 feet wide to 15 feet deep. This would be enough to cover a
bed.. The detector cost about $9.00. I will couple this to a Sensaphone
burglar alarm device that I have in my junk box. I think the original cost was
about $30.00. When the Sensaphone is triggered by the motion detector it will

call a phone number and deliver a message. I also plan on a sensitive floor mat
switch that would go under the mattress and activate the system only when
someone was in the bead.

As you can tell this is a very simple system. I am playing with it in my spare
time and so it has a low priority. Unless I can get other feed back it will
stay as a low priority.

Joe, Please let me know if you have any other inputs to an LDS project.
