Dear Russell,

I'm sorry you are irritated with me. My "shoddy quick-fix solution"
was an attempt to reconcile and heal old wounds.

They may never be healed, but I don't think trying is so terrible.

Our major problem in not internal but external. That is why I keep
harping on an attempted "truce". I'm well aware of the vast differences
in almost every way Alcor and ACS/TT do business, but the public isn't
aware. If there is a problem, the media will lump us all together as
cryonics nut cases. This will endanger us all uniformly. By making our
techniques available to TT, we diminish the possibility of being thrown
out with the bath water. Is that idiotic?

People have been kind enough to fill me in on the history of bad blood
between the organizations. It is serious and there are many real problems.
I, however, work every day with people who have been (and continue to)
point mega-tons of nuclear weapons at our country. I was raised in a
generation that was trained how to hide under its school desks in case
of an attack. We all had a space in our mind taken up by the death of
all we knew and loved by instant annihilation.

Does it do me any good to hold the Russians responsible for scaring us
so badly for so many years. Am I angrier at them for this fear than at
TT for poor suspension procedures?

No one is asking for forgiveness from anyone. What I am suggesting is
that we move on from here. There are no irreconcilable differences, only
people who want to hold on to past mistakes and continue to make others
pay for them. This is not productive. I'm no pollyanna. I'm trying to
disarm the Russians in my own best interests. Calling them names or
blaming them for past grievences will only delay the disarmament.

We can help TT. We have it in our power to move forward. It takes a
clear understanding of what is of ultimate importance: our egos or
patient care. I'm not asking any one to agree on procedures or
even to like each other. What I'm asking is that we keep trying to
make things better. It is in our own best interests.

By the way, a charity committee for homeless dewars is an excellent
idea. I'll have to get one started.

My best as always,
Michael Paulle
