SOURCE:The Register-Guard, Eugene, Oregon, May 30, l997 As lawmakers edged closer to forcing another statewide vote on Oregon's assisted suicide law, the law's chief sponsor warned Thursday that legislators might pay a political price for their actions. "Some people might lose their seats over this, there's so much anger and disillusionment," Barbara Coombs Lee said after a Senate panel backed a bill to refer the issue back to Oregon voters this fall. The House already has approved the House Bill 2954. If the full Senate also endorses the measure, Oregon voters will be asked this November if they want to reverse themselves and repeal the assisted suicide law.
