Subject: temp range for vitreous ice?

Suppose you wanted to freeze a patient solid, but minimize the ice crystal
damage -- and you didn't need long-term storage. Could you improve the
ratio of vitreous to crystalline ice by maintaining a temperature just
below the freezing point of your solutions?

I'll appreciate any tips -- references would be great, but off-the-cuff
knowledge is accepted with hearty thanks as well!
