I happen to be tied up a lot with other things right now, so I don't have lots of time for discussion. However I wish to draw attention to a matter of fact that I got wrong. There is at least one idea for a quantum computer (10 qubits) which could operate at room temperature --- though it does require other equipment etc which is hardly cheap. Cf SCIENCE 275(1997) 350ff. and also the discussion in 277(1997) pp. 1688-1690. While I do not think that this changes my basic point in the message in which I mentioned it, which is about the difference between optimizing and maximizing (which some seem to forget when discussing human beings and biology in general) those on Cryonet may form their own opinion on this issue. Given that we aren't trying to optimize ourselves but instead trying to optimize our computing devices, it would certainly be nice if we could somehow make quantum computing work. I hope that work in this area continues. Long long life, in whatever form, Thomas Donaldson Rate This Message: http://www.cryonet.org/cgi-bin/rate.cgi?msg=8610
