I think Steve Harris' critique of my post is largely correct. I
partially retract. I had proposed that cryonics organizations might be
wise to conduct surveys and focus groups of people who don't sign up.
That might help us do a better job of marketing.

He pointed out, correctly, I believe, that the largest number of those
folks will not--in a questionnaire or focus group--be able to be honest
enough to come up with their actual reasons.

I also agree with him that a major reason that people don't sign up
(Which we emotionally-insensitive Type I sorts can't understand) is that
most relationship-centered people (The people he calls Type II) don't
want to come back unless their relationships are at least somewhat
intact. I think his suggestion of having more of a social component
within the cryonics community would be helpful. Additionally, marketing
materials and verbal presentations to potential members need to discuss
this issue more overtly. For example, it might be recommended that
people try to solicit their friends and family to be frozen together.
I'd like to hear what other cryonet readers think might be done to
attract the Type II relationship-oriented crowd.

Where I don't agree with Steve, is that it would be a waste to do
surveys, focus groups or interviews. I believe that questions about
issues such as this one--the issue of why they would or wouldn't want to
be reanimated--could be quite revealing if done skillfully.
