X-Message-Number: 9165 From: Date: Sat, 14 Feb 1998 10:40:33 EST Subject: pets After Mr. Quick's post about his cat, I should make known the Cryonics Institute's policy to those who may not know it. (We have been in touch with Mr. Quick by phone, email, and mail, and he already knows all this.) CI will store pets, but only for members. Minimum price for a normal size cat, or a cat-size dog, is $5,000 (plus the $1,250 membership fee for the owner). Local services of a veterinary, and transport, would be extra and arranged and paid for by the owner. CI will throw in solutions at no charge, if there is time to send them and arrangements can be made with a vet. Although we will supply solutions and advice, CI does not do the preparation for two reasons. First, it is more appropriate and probably more effective for a vet to do them, using our solutions and suggestions. If the pet is near death, the procedure need not wait for natural death; the vet can use anaesthesia and begin while the cat is still alive. (Pets are better off than humans in this respect! Humans must wait for natural death, which worsens their chances both because of likely delays and because of further deterioration before death.) Second, if the pet is already dead, again time is saved if a local vet does the best he can, rather than the owner just doing a crude freezing or sending him to Michigan on ice. If the owner is already a member, we will act when the member has received and agreed to the contract and promised to pay promptly. If the owner is not yet a member, we must have the signed contract and the payment in hand before accepting the pet.
