X-Message-Number: 9174 Date: Tue, 17 Feb 1998 17:57:19 -0700 From: David Brandt-Erichsen <> Subject: Oregon update Report from the Euthanasia Research and Guidance Organization (ERGO): Eugene, Oregon, Tuesday.-- The Oregon Death with Dignity Act, l994, escaped unscathed from the courts today. Attorneys for the National Right to Life Committee sought to introduce a new plaintiff to the three year old case, and also claimed that the 'stigmatic' argument of their original case had not been dealt with by the 9th Circuit Court of Appeal when it overturned their case. Judge Michael Hogan deferred judgment on all the issues and showed no inclination to slap another holding injunction on the law as he had once done, only to be told by the appeal court to lift it. Eli Stutsman, attorney for Oregon Right to Die, said after the case that the voters of Oregon, who have twice voted for the law permitting physician-assisted suicide for the terminally ill (l994 and l997), can rest easy knowing that their law is in position and could be used if they wished.
