X-Message-Number: 9271 Date: Thu, 12 Mar 1998 23:09:05 -0700 (MST) From: Fred Chamberlain <> Subject: Alcor Conference and On-Line Issue of The Phoenix From: Fred Chamberlain () Subject: Alcor Conference and On-Line Issue of The Phoenix Date: Thurs, 12 Mar 1998 The current (just released) issue of The Phoenix (double size, 16 pages) is now on the web via a link at the Alcor Website - http://www.alcor.org (there are conspicuous icons for both "Conference" and "Alcor Phoenix On-Line" .) James Halperin (author of "The First Immortal") will be leading a panel on "Identity and Reanimation", for those who are focused on that after hearing Marvin Minsky's panel about "What's in it for me?" (if they make it into the future), at the Saturday Night Banquet. As you'll see, in addition to speeches by Ralph Merkle and Robert Ettinger, there will be presentations by Greg Fahy, Brian Wowk, Mike Darwin, Dave Pizer, Paul Segall, Hal Sternberg, Michael Cloud, and a team of three insurance/trust/financial management professionals from Smith Barney, describing its "Wealth Preservation Programs" (Smith Barney is the manager of the Alcor Patient Care Trust). Linda and I will talk about "Cryonics Rescue Systems" (BioTransport, Inc. - see The Phoenix on-line via the above links, or your own hard copy.) Transportation will be available during the second day for those who want to tour Alcor's facilities. If cryonics technology is your passion, you'll want to hear about the work at 21st Century Medicine, Inc., which is recovering animals after 16 minutes of cardiac arrest with strong indications that they are free of long term damage. Also, they will talk about ultra rapid cooling they are perfecting and other cryobiology work which is on the way. All of this points toward better suspensions being possible in the near future; the development process will be a key theme of the Conference. We wish these details could have been in your hands months earlier, but some of the key speakers were only confirmed in the last several weeks. On the web as described above, you'll find (already) a quite complete "program" including pictures, biographical sketches, and details on the presentations. Your homework assignment for the Conference (if you haven't done it already) is to read "The First Immortal" by James Halperin. I'm sad to say that the glowing accounts I've written about it are based on reading the twelfth edition of draft (it had *29* rewrites). *Everyone* tells me, "You've got to be kidding! The final version is *much* better than what you read! OK!!! They're no doubt right. I've got homework to do myself, and I better get with it! One final note - we will have colorful bumper stickers for sale at the Conference which say, "This car will be frozen until future mechanics can discover how to fix it!" No, we didn't come up with that. It surfaced recently at a truck stop on the Arizona-California line. The bumper sticker manufacturer says it "didn't sell all that well," so he's not going to reprint them. It's one of those rare and valuable "collector's items" to take home with you.
