Subject: Success

Thomas Donaldson (9687) asks me to give
some "rough estimate" of how much growth would be
required for me to call cryonics a "success".

My answer is that the growth of the cryonics
movement will contribute in various ways to the success
of the movement. The more growth we have, the greater
the success of the movement. The one caveat is that,
I believe there would be social risks if growth occurs
*extremely* rapidly. Since growth has been very slow in
the past 33 years, the risk of too rapid growth is some-
thing that doesn't concern me at the moment.

Thomas asks: "What level of recruitment
should be put out" during the period when our suspension
technology remains approximately at its present level?"

My answer is that, at this time, we should focus
primarily on low-cost efforts with a high-yield probability,
such as trying to sign up people who are already interested
in being signed up, and trying to get better placement for
cryonics web sites on search engines.

However, the amount of time, money and
effort spent on recruitment will depend mostly on those
who believe recruitment should be a high priority at this
time. Those, such as myself, who could contribute to
promotion and recruitment, but who wish to devote their
efforts to research, will only be contributing marginally to
recruitment for now.

The primary reason that I and others in 21st
Century Medicine (21CM) are concentrating so intensely
on research is because we have an unprecedented
opportunity to make major advances in cryopreservation
and cryonics in the next several years.
