Scott Badger has given us the text of the recent Boston Globe article on Ralph Merkle and cryonics. Nothing remarkable about the writer's attempts at humor, but the listing of 26 "nerds" mentioned by Merkle as cryonicists does remind us of something, viz.: Our memberships include much higher numbers of well informed people than would be expected on a random selection basis. These are not only "nerds" or technophiles, but also e.g. business people and physicians. (Also note that Merkle's list only includes those he happens to know about that have allowed links to their web sites.) I have sometimes said, "Doctors choose cryonics, twenty to one." That is, we have possibly 20 times as many physician members as would be expected on a population-proportionate basis. That was an estimate I made many years ago; I would like to get an update on this and on other prestigious occupations. Perhaps Dr. Badger might include this aspect in his prospective survey.
