I'd be curious to hear who else has been offered a free suspension, besides
Pohl and the OMNI contest winner (what an odd case). I can say that my
first interest in cryonics developed when I read an article about Jim
Halperin being signed up, and this was long before I communicated with him.
Point being (though I'm not sure I relish the idea), I was persuaded to take
a closer look because someone relatively popular was doing it. It's sad to
think that anyone will become dust when cryonics offers a chance for them to
survive, but it is particularly sad that we will lose the greatest minds in
our world. This has already probably been kicked around, but what about one
or more of the cryonics firms sharing the expense and offering (perhaps
annually?) a complimentary suspension to a high profile individual (e.g.
Stephen Hawking) as a sort of reward/honor for making a substantial
contribution in his/her field. Perhaps a number of candidates should be
identified and contacted to be informed of their candidacy so that it could
be determined who would accept and who wouldn't before the award was made.
S/he would also have to agree to speak openly about his/her intention to
carry through with the susupension when the press release is made available
to the media. Is this an old idea?

Best to all,

Scott Badger
