ALCOR NEVADA MINUTES
SUNDAY JUNE 14TH 5:00 PM - 7:00 PM
Mary Beth Richard Kars Ken Messer
Larry K. Covey Eric Klien Carlos Mondragon
Kenneth Fox Don Laughlin Douglas Nusbaum
Art Gerstztyn Tony Lewis Micke' Reynolds
Katie Kars Don McLain Jerry Searcy
Change of Date
The Alcor business meeting in California has been moved up a week
because of the Fourth of July weekend. Therefore the Alcor Nevada
meeting has been moved up a week to the third Sunday in July to avoid
a conflict with that meeting.
Subscriptions Expire
A subscription to these minutes requires either a payment of 75
cents/issue or for a subscriber to occasionally show up at meetings.
I will be generous with the second requirement for long distance
subscribers. The following people's subscriptions expire with this
issue unless they either send money or attend the next meeting:
Tamara Clark, Michael Emerling, Ken Kramer, and Jeanne Maust.
Special Guests
Charles Platt and his soon-to-be wife, Susan, will attend our next
meeting. Charles's article in a recent issue of Omni has so far
generated over 1100 responses to Alcor. He is now working on a book
about the people involved in cryonics.
Tanya Jones, our newest Alcor employee, plans on attending our next
meeting. I wouldn't be surprised if she brought Ralph Whelan, editor
of Cryonics and former Alcor Boston member with her.
David Greenstein, an Alcor Boston member, originally was going to
attend this meeting but was unable to accommodate the change in
meeting date. He will attend the Alcor business meeting in
California instead.
EMTs
Jerry and I had our EMT training date changed once again by Mercy
Ambulance. We were first going to train in August, then the date was
changed to October. The date was finally changed to June 2nd.
That's right; Jerry and I have already begun training and are nearly
half way through the course.
Don Laughlin brought some of his employees to our meeting to discuss
training. Carlos Mondragon, Alcor's president, was a surprise guest
and handled many questions by the employees. I handed out my copies
of "Cryonics - Reaching For Tomorrow" to them. I have also ordered
20 more copies for future meetings. He will have more of his
employees attend our next meeting.
At the meeting it was asked if the employees would be on 24 hour call
and for what area would they be responsible. The answer was that
they would be on 24 hour call for Southern Nevada. I asked Carlos
how many times such situations had occurred during Alcor's 20 year
history and the answer was twice. So we shouldn't be participating
in too many emergencies.
After the meeting I was asked how could EMTs use drugs like Heparin
since only paramedics are authorized to use such drugs. The answer
is that we are working on patients who are legally dead. Another
question asked was how could we store such medicines if we aren't
legally allowed to use them on legally alive people. The answer is
that Alcor has received prescriptions for these drugs for medical
research. I have contacted a local official in the Nevada government
to double check and make sure that we are violating no Nevada laws.
I would be surprised if there are any problems as we have suspension
kits in heavily regulated states such as California and New York and
quite socialist governments like Australia and the U.K.
[ FYI: I hear from a resident of the UK that the "UK has changed
considerably in the last few years! In some ways, it's much more
free-market than the US." The characterization above thus may
be out-of-date. - KQB ]
After one group of Don Laughlin's employees have passed at least
level one EMT training, I will arrange a training session with Alcor.
I hope to have a minimum of nine people in our first training session
composed of Eric Klien, Cindy Piturka, Jerry Searcy and 6 employees.
Based on the amount of employees that attended our last meeting, we
may end up training quite a bit more than 6 employees. (Only one of
his three shifts attended.)
My overall goal is to eventually train people at as high a medical
level as possible. While, level one EMTs will be fine to begin with,
having people who are level two EMTs or paramedics would be even
better. One employee mentioned that he had an expired level two EMT
license, so I wouldn't be surprised if a few of the employees quickly
reached advanced medical training.
ABBREVIATED EMERGENCY INSTRUCTIONS
FOR STABILIZATION OF ALCOR CRYONIC SUSPENSION PATIENTS
Following are the instructions for what Alcor will be training us to
do. We can consider learning the non abbreviated instructions in the
future which are for situations where the patient has been legally
dead less than 60 minutes. I am reprinting these instructions to
help the employees on this mailing list get an idea of what we will
be doing in the future.

Doctors
I called the doctor that Frank Ujlakie recommended and he didn't
return my call. I would recommend that Frank speak to him when the
doctor visits his bookstore again.
Recruiting Members
The Las Vegas Review-Journal ran my free ad for a third time. It
*again failed but I will run it again next month.
I just spoke to Lonnie Hammargren, a locally famous person in charge
of the Southern Nevada Astronomical Society. He agreed that I could
speak to his group on July 1st at 7:30 PM. If anyone wishes to attend
the meeting I will provide you with directions. I will contact Tanya
at Alcor and inquire about their available slide presentation.
Certificates of Religious Belief
Jerry Searcy and I had our wallet sized certificates of religious
belief laminated and now have one more layer of protection against
coroners and other officials.
Hydergine
Carlos mentioned that when his father started to get old, he
complained of being unable to read the newspaper. He could see the
words but he couldn't understand them. This bothered him a lot
because reading the paper from front to back was a favorite habit of
his. He was given a prescription of Hydergine and this corrected
his problem. So Hydergine does have some ability to improve brain
circulation.
Vial of Life
I passed around the Vials of Life that I received for free at the
local Sav On Drugs store. You are supposed to put medical
information in these vials and stick them inside your refrigerator
door. You then place a large Vial of Life label on your front door
and a smaller label on the front of your refrigerator. You are also
given a wallet card which I won't be using because I prefer my
certificate of religious belief. For additional information call
229-3508.
Aquatred
This tire available from Goodyear was recommended by Richard Kars.
Not only is it good for staying on the roads in the rain but he found
that it helps keep the car on the road during sharp turns.
Considering how slippery the roads get in Nevada when it rains, it
would be a good idea if all cryonicists in Nevada bought such tires
or similar ones. This tire lists for $125 and sells for $105. He
also mentioned that Consumer Reports said that Michelein tires were
unsafe despite their commercials.
The Seed Of The Woman
Charlie Hartman should give me the publisher's and author's name for
this book. Tanya Jones is interested in this book that we could use
for religious groups.
Word Processor
If anyone has a word processor for sale, Forrest W. Munden in
Phoenix, Arizona is looking for one. I will be glad to provide his
phone number to interested parties.
Next Meeting
Our next meeting will be on the third Sunday of next month, July
19th, at 5:00 PM at the executive office in the Riverside casino in
Laughlin, Nevada. Take 95 south from Las Vegas, through Henderson,
where it forks between 95 and 93. Bear right at the fork and stay on
95 past Searchlight until you reach the intersection with 163 a
little before the border with California. Go left on 163 and stay on
it until you see signs for Laughlin. You can't miss the Riverside
Casino in Laughlin, Nevada. For more information, call Eric Klien at
(702) 255-1355. I'll be car pooling there with other Las Vegans.
